South Lakeland Young Carers is an organisation based in Kendal that provides support in a variety of ways to children and young people who care for someone in their family.
At South Lakeland Young Carers, we offer children and young people a chance to relax and take some time out from caring. We run a variety of trips and residentials, lunch clubs in schools, support groups and one-to-one support for all young people that access the service.
During the Easter and Christmas holidays we organise day trips; and, in the past we have taken young carers to the Trafford Centre, Liverpool One, a Panto, Lazer Quest, Sandcastle in Blackpool… and there’s many more exciting things coming up this year!
Each summer we take the young carers on a residential. For the past few years our junior group has stayed at Windermere school, and last year, we took our senior group to the YMCA Lakeside. At both residentials, they had the opportunity to take part in activities such as kayaking, canoeing, climbing, king swing, pamper pole, stories round a camp fire and much more!
During the half term breaks we offer training sessions. In the past, young carers have accessed training in First Aid, How to Handle Bullying, Self-Esteem, Dealing with Strong Emotions, Healthy Eating, and DJing.
We provide transport (usually taxis) in order to ensure that the activities we put on are accessible to everyone. However, this can be very expensive and so we ask that people only book a taxi if there is no other way for them to attend the event.
