Dates for your Diary

25th Anniversary Gala Dinner

This year our Gala Dinner, which will be sponsored by Welbeing, will take place on Friday 24 November at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal.  There’ll be a delicious three course meal – leek and potato soup, roast turkey and profiteroles with chocolate sauce –  and music from The Seals (back by popular demand).  There’ll also be a raffle and auction with fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

The combination of our 25th anniversary and the Christmas atmosphere should make this an extra special evening and we hope you’ll be able to join us.  Tickets cost £40 per head (or £350 for a table of 10) and you can buy them here or by contacting Emma Bennie on 01539 815970 or email admin@slcarers.org.uk.  If you book your tickets before the end of September, we’ll enter your name into our Early Bird prize draw.

The dress code is formal – please dress to impress.

If you’re a business who would like to donate a prize, we’d love to hear from you.

Our 2016 dinner, sponsored by South Lakes Housing, raised more than £4,500 for our work with Carers.  Following a four course dinner, Kev Kendal from 1818 Auctioneers held a fundraising auction where prizes included a weekend for two in a camper van donated by E S Hartley, a champagne afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe and a home visit by Santa Claus.

Welbeing, our event sponsors, is one of the leading telecare companies in the UK. They offer high quality, fully integrated managed services and work closely with customers to develop innovative, cost effective solutions.  They work with Cumbria County Council to offer a telecare service to support people to live independently in their own home. Telecare is based around a pendant worn around the neck or wrist. This provides access to a 24-hour monitoring service offering an instant response at the touch of a button from anywhere in your home or garden.

A Grand Day Out!

There are still some places available for our trip to Wensleydale next week so we’ve extended the booking deadline to Monday 25 September. If you’re a Carer and you’d like to go along, give Marian a call on 01539 815970.

We have been fortunate to obtain funding from the Carers Trust for a Carers’ trip and volunteer Nancy Huck has kindly organised a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery on Wednesday 27 September.

We will travel by coach through the Yorkshire Dales to the Creamery – the home of Wensleydale cheese – where you can watch a cheese making demonstration (one of their Cheese Experts will craft a 500g cheese from 8 pints of milk in 40 minutes), visit the Museum,  take part in interactive games and exhibits and learn about the 1,000 year history of Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese.   Or, if you’d prefer, you can wander around the market town of Hawes with its Museum and shops.

If you would like to visit the “Cheese Experience”, please let us know when you complete the form as we will need to book this in advance.

The Wensleydale Creamery has a restaurant and coffee shop in which you can enjoy lunch.

You can find out more about the Creamery here or about Hawes here.

Although the trip is free to Carers we are asking for a £5 deposit to secure your place.  This will be refunded to you on arrival at Kendal Leisure Centre  (if you wish this can be donated to South Lakeland Carers, please indicate on the reply slip by ticking the applicable box).  If you cancel and we are not able to reallocate your place we will be unable to offer a refund.

We will leave Kendal Leisure Centre at 9.30 am and return at approximately 5.00 pm.

There will be room for folding wheelchairs on the coach – please complete the form as necessary.

If you would like to go on the trip, please complete this form and return along with your payment/deposit as applicable to South Lakeland Carers, Unit 16, Shap Road Industrial Estate, Kendal, LA9 6NZ, to reach us by Friday 15 September.  Cheques should be made payable to ‘South Lakeland Carers’.

Places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

VOCES8 Concert

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Cumberland & Westmorland Freemasons, there will be an evening of internationally-acclaimed choral music from VOCES8 on Saturday 9 September at Kendal Leisure Centre.

During the evening, the Freemasons of the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland will be presenting South Lakeland Carers with a cheque for £10,000. In addition, they will be confirming the results of the public vote for the MCF Community Awards.  It will be an exciting evening for us!

VOCES8 are one of the world’s most versatile and best-loved singing ensembles which has toured the world performing an evocative repertory from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary arrangements.

Tickets for the evening cost £20 and are available from The Brewery Arts Centre on 01539 725133.   All proceeds from the evening will be donated to local charities.

Defying Dementia Day

Saturday 16 September, 10.00 am – 3.30 pm
Lancaster University

You are invited to this free meeting, which is aimed at the general public, but is a unique opportunity to bring together everyone in the North West with an interest in dementia – staff and volunteers of dementia associations, people living with dementia, family member, clinicians, care professionals and scientists – to share and learn from one another.

The Day will open at 10am, followed by a wide variety of talks held in two parallel sessions and concluding in a panel discussion chaired by BBC Radio Lancashire’s John Gillmore. We will have a marketplace in the foyer, providing a wealth of dementia related information, and there are activities for people with dementia.

Weekly Art Sessions with Space2Create

We’re working with Space2Create to offer a weekly art session specifically for Carers each Tuesday from 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm.

Research proves the benefits of being creative as part of a group. The sessions will help anyone who has found themselves isolated or excluded while caring for someone with long term physical or mental health conditions.   They provide creative opportunities such as painting, drawing, collage and craft, which are supportive, accessible and unthreatening. All S2C sessions have a very positive atmosphere and the participants are mutually supportive. The sessions help to boost confidence, self-respect and wellbeing.

All materials are provided, but a suggested donation of £3 is welcomed.
