The Wordsworth Trust has been working in partnership with Lakeland Arts Trust facilitating two groups for people living with dementia, one in Kendal and one in Penrith. The innovate and creative approach, which has been developed over the last two years between the Alzheimers Society and artists from Art Sense in Kendal, brings together hands-on work with mixed-media art and poetry reading and creation. Their model of working has provided the inspiration to set up a similar group in Penrith.
The work recognises the shift in perception and awareness that occurs with the onset and progression of dementia. It offers a chance to get involved and try new things in an environment that is well suited to the heightened emotional sensitivity and artistic creativity that often occurs with dementia. The techniques are stimulating and very accessible to those with short term memory problems. It also provides respite without separation for those who care for loved ones – in these groups everyone becomes a participant. The groups show the power of creativity to bring people into the moment and the positive effect this has on improving wellbeing.
For more information, please contact Wordsworth Trust.
The group is for people with dementia and carers of people with dementia, who can come together, alone or escorted.
